Sometimes when he watches her, he focuses and lets himself see all the what ifs of her life. He lets himself see who could she be, hadn’t it been for him.
In one version of her life, she’s a talented and bright surgeon who saves people on daily basis. In another - she’s a driven and accomplished lawyer who wins every case thrown her way. In another one - and he cannot help but scowl at this, because really? - she’s a well-known and respected archaeologist. Another - and this one makes him smirk - she’s a thief and a con woman, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. And by ‘poor’ she usually means herself.
All of her possible - but never lived - timestreams blur before his eyes. In all of them she’s happy and safe, and loved. In none of them she knows him. In none of them she dies for him.
He wonders if she knows about all the things that could have happened, about all the paths she could’ve taken hadn’t her choice been taken from her. He wonders if she hates him for that. A small part of him hopes she does.
