“They got what they wanted.” (— The Doctor)
Each box gave the person they were being watched by what they wanted.
Brian, at the Doctor’s request, kept watch over the little box. Just waiting and watching— recording even. Wanting his box to do something so he could inform the Doctor, whether out of a sense of new-found awe for the universe or just to impress the Doctor, he does it without complaint. So when the time comes and the boxes are activated his just rattles about on the desk. He even sits up and eagerly whispers/tells it to: ‘Do it again.’ Which it does; Brian then excitedly runs off to tell the Doctor.
Rory spent 2000 years guarding Amy who was inside The Pandorica, a box that he wished would just open so he could see his beloved, but knows he can’t see inside of it until the 2000 years are up as the Doctor told him it would take. That’s why when his box opens, it does so, but in the opposite direction. Quickly closing and reopening on another side, never letting him look inside as he knows he can’t but desperately wishes he could. How many times had Rory circled The Pandorica hoping to find a flaw, a chink in the stone, allowing him entry. To save his Amy from an eternity inside a box on the brink of death because of his hand.Amy really wants to have a
notherchild with Rory but can’t. As shown in AotD it tortures her mentally so much that she feels she needs to let Rory go. So that he can go find someone else to make him happy and give him the children, the family he wants so much. The box takes her blood as a sample and simulates, not hers, but the heartbeat of her would’ve been child. (It’s like a Fetal Doppler) Her greatest desire isn’t to have a child though, it’s to make Rory happy. And what she thinks will make him happy is a child of their own blood that they can actually raise together as a family. Like Amy said: ‘It’s always been him [Rory].’The Doctor loves a good puzzle. And we’re shown during the episode that he really can’t stand being stationary in time
at all. He even jumps around, taking Amy and Rory to 1889(?) on their wedding anniversary and when they return he tells Brian it’s been several weeks. As curious as he was as to why the boxes were there he really wanted something exciting to do. Which is why I think he insults the little box when all it does is float, it would be rather disappointing if that was all it could do. You can see his excitement when his box extends a gun out and shoots lasers at him; this is a counter to his boredom of just hanging around. Then instead of pursuing the Doctor in a chase, it goes and surfs the internet on the telly. This is the mystery he so craved, a piece to the puzzle in figuring out what thousands upon thousands of little black boxes are doing on Earth. What do they want?
[At a stretch one could even say that because of his being a Timelord, his desire to keep the Ponds with him longer put off all the boxes activating for nearly a year; Allowing him to have his time with them.]
